Google Business Profile management: the local SEO playbook

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is often the first thing customers see when they search for a business like yours. Here's how to set it up, optimize it, and manage it so you show up in the local map pack and turn searches into calls, bookings, and visits.

Why your Google Business Profile matters

For local businesses — med spas, restaurants, contractors, clinics, and more — the majority of new customers find you through a local Google search. A complete, active profile is what gets you into the "map pack": the three highlighted businesses shown above the regular results.

Google rewards profiles that are accurate, complete, and regularly updated with better visibility. That means managing your profile isn't a one-time task — it's an ongoing local SEO channel.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Search your business name on Google. If a profile already exists, click "Claim this business". If not, create one at google.com/business. Google will ask you to verify ownership — usually by postcard, phone, or video. Verification is required before your edits go live and before you rank.

Step 2: Optimize every field

  • Business name — use your real name, no keyword stuffing.
  • Primary category — choose the most specific match; add relevant secondary categories.
  • Services & description — describe what you offer in natural language.
  • Hours — keep them accurate, including holidays.
  • Phone, website & booking link — point these to a fast, mobile-friendly site.
  • Service area — set the areas you actually serve.

How to add a manager to your Google Business Profile

Want an agency or team member to help manage your profile without sharing your password? Add them as a manager:

  1. Open your Business Profile and go to the Menu → Business Profile settings.
  2. Select People and access.
  3. Click Add and enter the person's Google email.
  4. Choose a role — Manager (can edit most info) or Owner (full control).
  5. Send the invite. They'll accept and gain access instantly.

This is the safest way to let Pavvlo optimize your profile — you keep ownership, we do the work.

Step 3: Build reviews and reputation

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals — and the biggest trust factor for new customers. Ask happy customers to leave a review, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to every review (positive or negative) promptly and professionally.

Step 4: Post updates, offers, and photos

Fresh content signals an active business. Post offers, events, and news regularly, and add high-quality photos of your work, team, and location. Profiles with recent photos and posts consistently outperform stale ones.

Step 5: Manage it every month

The businesses that win locally treat their profile as a living channel: monitoring insights, updating info, gathering reviews, and posting consistently. If that sounds like more than you have time for, that's exactly what we handle.
